When Jimmy’s sister reached out to me on Instagram with a mere twenty-four hours’ notice, my ADHD heart completely skipped a beat. A spontaneous Boston City Hall elopement was unfolding right before us, and the universe seemed to clear the path for Ashlee and Jimmy to say their vows.

It was an exciting, entirely serendipitous collision of the right place and the right time. Everything effortlessly fell into place. I just happened to have a surplus of film resting in my fridge, waiting for a spontanious Boston City Hall elopement.

There is a distinct, vibrating energy that comes with a last-minute celebration. You shed the weight of expectations and lean entirely into the raw, honest emotion of the day. Within those twenty-four hours, our small community of creatives pulled together to make magic. Roxy from Rumphius Farms was able to whip up a quick, stunningly delicate bouquet for Ashlee, adding a touch of soft romance to the urban setting.

Jimmy’s family also stepped in to elevate the afternoon, treating the couple to a luxury car rental complete with a private driver. Watching Ashlee and Jimmy sink into the plush leather seats of their getaway car, their hands tightly intertwined, felt like a scene pulled straight from an old Hollywood romance. They were remarkably lovely to work with, radiating joy that made documenting their Boston City Hall Elopement so easy.

Because this entire day materialized so quickly, I had very little background information on the couple before my camera was clicking away. We had to rely entirely on intuition and trust. Fortunately, Jimmy’s sister—a brilliant creative director based in Chicago, where Jimmy is originally from—had a very specific and striking vision for the shoot.

She wanted the bold, unapologetic look of direct flash combined with the timeless intimacy of black and white photography. To bring her vision to life, I shot almost entirely on black and white film.

The direct flash added an editorial edge to their portraits, capturing the spontaneous, fleeting energy of a Boston City Hall elopement. There were no filtered sunsets or heavily staged poses. It was just the two of them, committing their lives to one another in the middle of a bustling city. The romance of film managed to show them as their honest and unfiltered selves, preserving a day that was as unexpected as it was perfect.
